Featuring Community Police Team Officer Nicholas Boys and Friends of Upper Fremont. 7 pm August 24 on Zoom

ear Fremont Neighborhood Council Members, residents, and friends,

In light of the COVID-19 crisis and in the interest of everyone’s safety, the Fremont Neighborhood Council is meeting via Zoom at this time. Please plan to join our August meeting on Monday, August 24, 2020 at 7:00pm.

We have terrific programs planned for both the August and September meetings!

On Monday, Seattle Police Officer Nicholas Boys, our Community Police Team (CPT) Officer from the North Precinct will be joining us to talk about public safety in Fremont. CPT Officers focus on long-term and chronic problems in specific neighborhoods—problems that are outside the bounds of regular patrol work. It is their job to understand the ongoing problems and concerns of neighbors and businesses.

As many of you may remember the Fremont neighborhood has partnered In the past with SPD, the City Attorney’s Office and the City Council to address public safety issues in the neighborhood. Organizations such as the Fremont Aurora Wallingford Neighbors (F.A.W.N.) were effective in helping to reduce crime along Aurora. With the recent rise in crime in our neighborhood (and the city), the Neighborhood Council has invited Officer Boys to join Monday’s meeting so we can engage in a discussion about public safety and ways in which the Neighborhood Council and residents can partner with SPD in addressing current issues.

We will also hear from Friends of Upper Fremont (friendsofupperfremont.org), a neighborhood group that is working for sensible development to keep our neighborhood viable. Friends of Upper Fremont has recently filed an Appeal of a SDCI land use decision for 3959 Fremont Avenue North that will enable a 32 unit microhousing project to change the project’s principle entrance from Fremont Avenue North to the un-named, dead-end alley to the project’s west. The Neighborhood Council has been following this project for sometime and in light of the recent SDCI Administrative land use decision and its impact on the neighborhood, we have invited Friends of Upper Fremont to provide an update to the Neighborhood Council.

Lastly, the Neighborhood Council is preparing for our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Monday, September 21st, one week earlier than scheduled due to Yom Kippur which falls on our usual meeting date (the fourth Monday of the month). I am very pleased to announce that we have two terrific speakers scheduled: North Precinct Liaison Attorney Meagan Westphal from the City Attorney’s Office and Seattle City Council Member Alex Pederson from Council District 4, which includes east Fremont. There will be time for questions from both speakers.

The AGM is the meeting at which the Neighborhood Council elects Boardmembers and Officers for the coming year. Board Secretary Judie Clarridge has been leading the nominating process for the Board. So far the following candidates have been identified for the Board: Dennis Bateman, Tawny Bates, Judie Clarridge, Linda Clifton, Jim Engelhardt, Bruce Grewell, Norma Jones, Shawn Mulanix, Erik Pihl and Joe Swain. We are still seeking additional candidates for the Board. FNC Bylaws allow for at least nine (9) and no more than (15) Board member positions. To qualify, prospective Board members need to attend at least two meetings in the last twelve months. The August and Septemeber meetings will count towards that requirement. If you are interested, please contact Judie Clarridge (dclarridge@aol.com) or me (erikpihlfnc@outlook.com) or one of the other current Board members.

If you are not presently a member of the Fremont Neighborhood Council, you can join here
