The Hazel Heights group sends FNC, one of the project sponsors, “the latest info & photos from Vicki Robinson–our fabulous volunteer project lead with equally fabulous Cheryl Knox–for our mosaic art front entrance sign project”

and reports next steps:

Glass tiles to surround/frame out the mosaic from Bedrock (gave discount, purchased using remaining FNC grant money, rest earmarked to cover grout/thinset)

The next step is the wall prep (logistics meeting held last weekend). Dan (Mageau) can assist Tim and Peter (HH gardener volunteers)

Mosaic placement is June 25

Wall prep is June 1 (All dates dependent on weather.)

TOTAL COMPLETION: 1st week of July 2013”

Organizers write that “If H.H. volunteers want to photo-document the process that would be good. (Also we’ll need lunch for the community volunteers.)

Besides Cheryl and me, we’ll have 3 people volunteering from Seattle Mosaic Arts (SMA) to help install – Hanako and Emily (with SMA owner Claire). People are welcome to come and view, as long as they know that we will be working a little bit madly and probably not available to field questions, so please give us a lot of space.

“Final material costs from Seattle Mosaic Arts above grant of $1000 (SMA donating time and expertise): $300.00. Vicki originally wasn’t sure how much installation support we’d have from SMA, but several generous SMA folks are volunteering their expertise so that’s covered. Thanks again to everyone who pitched in with glass cutting and placement at the mosaic work parties Vicki & Cheryl organized at SMA!

“Support Vicki and Cheryl really need during this last phase is for Hazel Heighsters to step up with photo documentation of the process, providing food during installation work parties, and donations to cover the rest of the materials cost. Please send your donation c/o Marya Felenchak, HH treasurer, 4231 Baker Ave NW, Seattle WA 98107; make checks out to “P-Patch Trust for Hazel Heights”–thank you!

“A community celebration of our gorgeous new art sign is planned after all is done. Tentatively scheduled to coincide with the annual Neighbor Nite Out party Hazel Heights sponsors, this year on evenng of Tuesday 8/6–Marya’s coordinating, volunteers will be needed!” From Beckey Sukovaty (HH site co-coord w/ Nicole)

FROM KING COUNTY METRO: ” This email is to inform you that King County Metro and Seattle Department of Transportation are working together on a proposal to improve transit service and traffic flow on Fremont Ave North between North 34th Street and North 35th Street that would result in some parking revisions along Fremont Ave North.

“Since September 2012, the number of buses serving the northbound and southbound bus stops on Fremont Ave North just north of 34th Street has increased from about 8 buses an hour to 15 buses an hour during the peak. This increases the likelihood of two buses arriving at a bus stop at the same time and the current stops are not long enough to accommodate this. This results in the following bus blocking one of the travel lanes until the leading bus is able to leave, causing delays to riders and to general purpose traffic in the area. Similarly, buses must wait for traffic queues to clear in order to pull into the travel lane when leaving the northbound bus stop and when entering the southbound bus stop. Restricting parking along the block would allow for buses to serve the stops without having to wait for vehicular traffic to clear. A total of 2 commercial loading zones, 1 passenger loading zone, and about 40 feet of general parking would be removed to facilitate these improvements.” Kendra Dedinsky, PE, NW District Facilities Planner, King County Metro Transit Route Facilities (206) 263-4954

Service cuts hearing: Tuesday, May 14, 3:30 p.m. – open house, 4 p.m. – testimony begins–at Union Station, 401 S Jackson St, Seattle
Can’t attend? Submit your comments online

The letter from KING COUNTY METRO TO FNC: “As a valuable organization or group serving our community, we wanted you to be aware of an upcoming opportunity for the public to talk with King County Council members about how transit cuts would affect them and ideas they have for addressing Metro’s funding shortfall.

“The King County Council’s Transportation, Economy and Environment Committee will hold a special meeting Tuesday, May 14 to take public testimony about potential Metro Transit service cuts. Committee members want to hear how people might be affected by service reductions and their ideas for alternatives.

“Metro faces a $75 million annual shortfall and will have to cut service by up to 600,000 hours, or 17 percent, beginning in fall 2014 unless new funding becomes available. Roughly two-thirds of Metro bus routes might be eliminated, reduced or revised. Learn about what’s at risk.

“Metro has had a severe funding shortage since 2008. So far we have avoided major service reductions by cutting staff positions and programs, raising fares, digging into reserves, and taking many other actions. We’ve adopted recommendations from a performance audit to save about $22 million annually, and have secured $121 million in grant funding to help develop high-volume RapidRide lines in major travel corridors.

“The County adopted a congestion reduction charge to provide supplemental funding for two years while the Legislature considered transportation funding solutions. That charge will run out in mid-2014, and no more reserve funds will be available. If no additional funding is approved, Metro will have to reduce service to close the budget gap.

“You can help:

Attached is a “rider alert” you can print and post in your organization

Forward this message to your networks

Attend the hearing or submit testimony online

Request a presentation for your group or clients (reply to this email)

“Please let us know if you have any questions or need additional information.

In Community,

…absolutely delighted to announce the launch of our brand new website! It’s a whole new look for us, and we think you’ll love it as much as we do. ,,,For the past eleven years, Northwest SEED has been empowering communities all over the Pacific Northwest to take control of their local energy assets. Northwest SEED’s efforts empower local action to address the global issues of climate change and resource depletion. We cannot wait to take action. Instead, we can start, here and now in our own community, to build a resilient, distributed energy network. Our work helps individuals, families, and communities become active purveyors of clean, local energy alternatives such as solar and wind energy.

Our new website is the perfect place to keep you up to date on Northwest SEED’s exciting projects. We’re working hard on new ways to make access to renewable energy easier, bring Solarize to new neighborhoods, and working with farmers and rural small businesses from Walla Walla to the Willamette Valley.
